How to make a level:In Liero Xtreme, a level consists of three separate level images, all of which should have the same dimensions:
Front image 1
Back image 2
Material image 3
Dimensions of a level image are limited to minimum of 320x191 (ingame screen size) and 4096x4096 pixels maximum. Two well known levels, Duel and FightBox represents the smallest possible size of a level.
Supported file formats are PNG, JPG (JPEG), PCX, BMP, TGA, GIF. The most used and probably the best formats are JPG and BMP.
The front image
This front (foreground) contains all the artwork that is visible at the start of the game when playing the the level. If you intend to make a map based on a JPG (JPEG) image, you should make sure it is a high quality image by zooming in a few times. Since LieroX uses a low 640x480 resolution, a too compressed JPG image will look bad. If the JPG image is too compressed (too low quality), it will look bad ingame, because Liero Xtreme uses a low 640x480 resolution. JPEG (and GIF) may also result in slight value changes in the colour which would cause the material file to be not processed correctly. Also notice that the backgorund part of the image is painted black. This reduces the size of the image and that way also the size of the level. Painting the area that is supposed to be in the background (air), is highly recommendable.
The back image
This back (background) shows what will be visible ingame once all destructable terrain (dirt) has been removed. It should be the same image as the front image, except that it shows what's behind the destructible terrain. As in the front image, in the background image there are painted areas aswell but this time only the terrain that's solid (rock). This is also made to reduce the size of the level and is recommendable when creating one.
The material image
This image contains all the information on how objects should interact with the level. The material image specifies whether a pixel is destructible terrain (dirt), indestructible terrain (rock), or empty (air).
Destructible terrain is designated by the white color (RGB: 255,255,255)
Indestructible terrain is designated by the black color (RGB: 0, 0, 0)
Empty terrain is designated by the gray color (RGB: 128,128,128)
The level maker
There is a program made for Liero Xtreme called Levelmaker. It can be found from your Liero Xtreme folder with the same name (LieroXtreme v0.56/Levelmaker/Levemaker.exe). The level maker is a simple program that grabs three image files and converts them into playable level (.lxl format). Using the program is simple:
Run the Levelmaker.exe file.
Click on the browse buttons and find the appropriate images (front image, background image and material image) Run the Levelmaker.exe file
Enter in a name of the level. The name should be capitalized.
Click on the compile button and save the level in your "levels" folder.
